In 1984, Chip Doring, Jaime Caffery, Tom Davis and Tim Nelson formed a highly surf/punk influenced band called the Crypt Kicker Five, named for the band mentioned in Bobby Boris Pickett's pop one-hit "Monster Mash." Based on Doring's distinctive guitar style fueled by a Moserite and Caffery's sexy fearless fretless bass, the band played in Seattle for two years. In that time they played with local acts the U-Men, the Blackouts, Soundgarden, and Skin Yard. After a year-long absence and at a mutual friend's urging, Doring and Caffery reformed the band, adding Rhonda Pelikan on guitar/vocals and eventually producer extraordinaire Jack Endino joined on as the drummer. In this lineup, the band played for two years in local clubs with the likes of Vexed, Danger Bunny, the Walkabouts, and in Vancouver B.C. with their Canuck pals, A Merry Cow. They recorded a demo in Endino's studio, Reciprocal Recording, along with some live material from one of their Vancouver gigs. Caffery's "Shoot to Kill" was featured on Secretions, a compilation of Seattle bands that was released in 1988.Pelikan left the band, and after trying out a new guitarist, the band became a three-piece with Caffery taking over the vocals. They went into the studio again to record a full-length, which was to be released on C/Z Records. All that was actually released was the "4th Hole" seven-inch. The band finally called it a day in 1990.Because we're a bunch of avid archivists, we saw it fit to offer up a few of the gems that were already in the can a decade ago on CDR. Here's whats available from us via mail order. Were you playing music when we were? It'd be fun to find out what you were doing then and what you're up to now. If you have any editorial you'd like add to another page of this site dedicated to that period in Seattle's musical history, send us an email and we'll include it when we revamp the site. And if you happen to have any photos or footage of our band that we're not aware of, please let us know! There was rumor of some video out there... |
